After winning the NHL MVP as well as the Art Ross Trophy, McDavid started the next season with an impressive home opener. He completed a hat trick in a 3-0 win against the Calgary Flames on 10/4/17.

McDavid became the first player in franchise history to score a hat trick in the home opener. His first goal was scored 11 minutes into the first period on an assist from Leon Draisitl. The second goal of the evening was a thing of beauty after McDavid showed off his speed by blowing by the Flames’ defenders after taking control of a loose puck in the neutral zone.
