Patrick Roy earned the nickname “Saint Patrick” for his unbelievable goaltending while playing for the Montreal Canadiens. He was reliable during the playoffs and a fierce competitor that coaches and teammates could rely on.
In the 1984-85 season, Roy played in one NHL® game and did not allow any goals. He went on to lead his AHL team, the Sherbrooke Canadiens, to a Calder Cup championship.
In the following season, Roy played in 47 games and earned the starting job for the Stanley Cup playoffs. He won the award for being the most valuable player in the playoffs, and led the Montreal Canadiens to a Stanley Cup® title.
